Grok Bot now lives on your iPhone's Action Button. Here's how to set it up and what to say
One press and hold starts a voice chat with your Bot, no app hunting. Here's the 30-second setup, what to use it for, and the catch if your phone has no Action Button.
What's trending: On Monday, the official Grok Bot account on X posted a short one: "Grok Bot is now one step closer. Set it as your iPhone's Action Button and press it to talk with Bot." That little button on the side of newer iPhones, the one most of us set to silent mode and forgot about, can now open a live voice chat with your Bot. Within hours people were posting setup steps, screenshots, and car-ride demos. Japan's ITmedia wrote it up too. It is not a giant new brain. It is a shortcut. But it is the kind of shortcut that changes how often you actually use the thing, like moving the coffee maker next to the bed.
How it works: Your Bot still lives on its own cloud computer. The button is just a faster front door. Apple lets the Action Button run a Shortcut, and the updated Grok Bot app now offers its own shortcuts there. ITmedia's editors saw three: List Bots, Send Message, and Start Voice Chat. Pick Start Voice Chat and a press and hold drops you straight into a live call with your Bot without opening the app first. Posts sharing the setup say you need app version 1.16 or newer and an iPhone 15 Pro or later with an Action Button. You also still need an eligible paid plan; SpaceXSI's mobile docs say the app needs iOS 18 or later. One user, Greg Soderquist, found Grok Bot was not in the list at first, "only Grok was," until he updated the app. So update first.
The play: use the button for the little things you forget the moment you think of them. You are in the car and remember the dentist bill: press, "remind me Friday to pay the dentist and check if insurance covered the cleaning." You are standing in the pantry: press, "add olive oil and coffee filters to my grocery list and tell me if there's a cheaper pack than last time." Walking out of a meeting: press, "draft a thank-you email to Dana, keep it short, don't send it." Lying in bed at 11pm: press, "check my calendar for tomorrow and tell me what I'm forgetting." The point is speed. A good idea that takes six taps to capture usually dies on tap three. One press keeps it alive. If you run a side gig, the same trick works for quick client notes, but you do not need a business to get value out of it.
How to run it: First, update Grok Bot from the App Store and open it once. Second, open your iPhone's Settings and tap Action Button. Third, swipe over to Shortcut, then tap Choose a Shortcut. Fourth, search "Grok Bot" and pick Start Voice Chat. Make sure it is listed under Grok Bot, not the regular Grok app, since they are separate apps. Apple's own guide warns that for Shortcut actions you have to pick a specific option, or the button does nothing. Fifth, press and hold the Action Button and start talking. Try a starter line like "From now on, when I use the button, keep answers to two sentences and save anything with a date to my reminders." No Action Button? Open your Bot's chat, leave the message box empty, and tap Start voice chat, which SpaceXSI's docs describe. One user, Vatsa, says he gets there by saying "Hey Siri, ask Grok Bot," and that it took less than a minute to set up. We have not tested that route ourselves, so treat it as a bonus, not a promise.
Watch out for: a faster button does not mean fewer guardrails. SpaceXSI's approvals docs say sending messages, purchases, and deleting data should stay behind your Allow once, Always allow, or Deny, and that the controls are the same on iPhone. Keep it that way, especially when you are talking while driving and can't read a card. Say "draft" or "don't send yet" out loud when you mean it. Never read a password or a one-time code into a voice chat; the docs say to enter those yourself with Take over. Voice chats are still your Bot doing work, so if your plan has usage limits, keep an eye on them before you make this a dozen-times-a-day habit. And if the button suddenly opens the app instead of a call, it is probably set to the app, not Start Voice Chat. Go back to step four. Your old silent-mode switch is now a walkie-talkie to your Bot. Use it like one: short, clear, and on purpose.
